What's up?
USA... USA.... USA....

Hello there good people. I haven’t blogged in awhile and I think now is a good time for multiple reason. First of all, we are halfway through the Olympic break which is exciting because it means the season will be starting up sooner than later. A lot of people have been asking what I have been doing during the break, so I thought I'd let you know. For the first 10 days, we were off, to do whatever we wanted and clear our heads. Then when we returned to Connecticut we have had practice every other day. Most of my days consist of practicing, watching the Olympics, catching up on movies, and of course tweeting (@da20one).

I just thought about something, today is the 2nd which means Track and Field starts tomorrow!!! I have to agree with Ticha Penichiero, I really get way too into the Olympics, although I have not tried to do any headstands like she has (which she failed miserable and almost hurt herself), I have to admit it has crossed my mind. The gymnast make it look so smooth and simple. I had to remind her that we have jobs we need to keep.

Ok switching gears to a more serious note. This past off season I played for a Euroleague team in Hungary called Seat Gyor. I left the team after being in Hungary a month or so and there was a lot of controversy surrounding my departure. Seat Gyor had made false accusations and statements in the media (newspapers, blogs, etc.) about how I conducted myself while I was there. They attacked my character as a person and a player which did not sit well with me (Thank you to the people that responded and defended me, it definitely didn’t go unnoticed). They also unjustly terminated my contract after I had refused to practice because I had not been paid. I chose not to respond back and forth with them, but instead handled matters legally (I did not sue them for slander, just for the money I was owed). Well today, I am happy to say that I have won the lawsuit against them, and I am most excited about the fact that the Arbitration found their accusations of my behavior false and not supported and said that I acted in a reasonable manner. Although it would be very easy to bad mouth Seat Gyor right now (don’t get me wrong, I have thought about it), but Im more interested in letting the people that support me know that everything worked out the way it should. Im blessed, and grateful for my agent Eric Wiesel who spent countless hours on this case.

And you know what, this is a great time to start the chant.... “USA.... USA... USA...” Feel free to watch the Olympics with me via Twitter. I'm there every night : )

The Amazing Sun

What a blazing and amazing weekend of Sun Basketball.  The Sun won both of their games this weekend but on completely different ends of the spectrum. The Sun game on Friday against New York was shocking to watch.  New York has some great players and we were trying to figure out what was going on the entire game.  Don't get me wrong, we were tickled to death that the Sun blew the doors off of the Mohegan Sun.  I wonder if it was a lucky night for the casino patrons as well.

Ron and I did not watch this game together because we had company, Mr. Alex Tibbs. He came by to pick up his daughter Shayla (my granddaughter)  Everyone went to the den to watch the game and I stayed in the bedroom and watched it on my laptop. I figured that Ron would be able to handle the game better with Alex than with me. At the conclusion of the game I realized that this was a game we could have watched together.  I mean how upset could Ron be with a 97 to 55 victory. But who knew?

The Sun win against New York broke a few records.  The point total for the victory was the largest in franchise history for a win by the Sun and the biggest loss for the New York franchise. They also set a WNBA and franchise  record for the biggest half-time point total. The Sun were burning hot this game without a cloud in sight.

On Sunday the Sun were in Atlanta for their second meeting with the Dream.  It was Father's Day and Babygirl sent Ron a beautiful video message since she could not spend the day with him. Ron always fusses when the girls buy him gifts for any occasion, so there is always drama on his special days.  Sunday was no different, but the girls are learning to accommodate his wishes.

The Dream are a scary team especially on the road.  We did not know that Angel McCoughtry would not be playing until we tuned in to the game. We were still on cloud nine from the previous win  so we settled in for what we thought would be a manageable game for the Sun since their leading scorer was not able to play.  Boy were we in for a rude awakening.  Ron and I parted company early in the first quarter.  I stayed in the bedroom on the laptop and Ron headed for the den.  He became so loud that I had to close the bedroom door. Believe me, it was bad.

The Sun struggled the entire game.  They would get close to the Dream, they would tie the Dream but they never could get ahead of the Dream.  I was so proud of Babygirl's play in the 3rd quarter. She scored 10 of her 19 points.  I could tell by the look on her face that she had had enough of the see saw and it was time to take the bull by the horns.  The fourth quarter continued to be back and forth, back and forth.  I was almost out of my mind with worry that the Sun were going to lose this game.  I am too old for this.  But miraculously with 3.1 seconds left on the clock the Sun took their first lead of the game and held on for the win.  As I said in the title of this blog - Who does that?

Next up a home and away game with Indiana.  Be Blessed!

FEVER and DREAM WEEKEND

What a great weekend of WNBA basketball!  Let me be more specific - What a great weekend of Connecticut Sun basketball!  The Sun added 2 games to the win column.  The road win at Indiana was fantastic.  We have been fortunate to be in attendance at both road wins this season.  I would like to think that we are good luck charms but if I think that way then I know there will be some disappointments down the road because we cannot attend every game, home or away. We had a great road trip to the game.  We left St. Albans early Friday morning and travelled by car to Indiana with the Buckeyes.

I guess Renee and I have a lot in common.  One thing is that we are always re-naming people.  The Buckeyes is the endearing name I have given to my sister-in-laws, Neva, Brenda and Shelia.  We picked up Neva and Brenda in Ohio (Buckeyes, get it) and arrived in Indianapolis in time to complete several things on Babygirl’s “To Do List” before the game.  Believe me she always has a list for me.

We were so happy with the Fever win because last year when we went to that game the Sun lost.  If you have ever been around Renee after a loss you know it is an unpleasant experience. Oh, by the way, Ron made it through the whole game (he had no alternative but to stay in the Banker’s Life Stadium).  He did voice his opinion very loudly several times near the conclusion of the game though. This let everyone around us (Fever fans) know that we were the enemy.

This year after the game we went to Champs in Indianapolis afterward and had a marvelous meal.  We enjoyed breaking bread with Asjha Jones and Chay Shegog.  There were a lot of the Sun players at the restaurant as well but the restaurant could not accommodate every one at the same table. We always enjoy seeing the Connecticut Sun UCONN sector - Kalana, Tina and Asjha - but we also have grown very fond of all of the players on the team. The next morning we headed back home, but made a pit stop at the Edinborough Outlet Mall in Indiana to top off the trip.

We watched the Dream game from home.  I know everyone wants to know if Ron made it through the entire game.  I am sad to report that he did not.  He left around half time but he did return for the last 3-4 minutes of the 4th quarter. It was nice to see the Sun take control of that game and finish it in grand style.  It was a very physical game and I am glad that everyone came out of it injury free.  Well, next on the agenda is LA.  I am scared to speculate the outcome of that game -  we may both leave the room.  Stay tuned.

Super Sub

First let me say that we are thrilled that we have the opportunity to witness every WNBA game on WNBA Live Access and even go back to the archives and re-witness those games that we want to see again.  We were fortunate as well to see almost every one of babygirl's UCONN college games thanks to CPTV.

Tonight there were some technical difficulties that caused us to not be able to see most of the first half of the Sun vs Lynx game.  We did however get to see the pre-game show and loved the piece they did on Babygirl- the Super Sub. That's a new title for her. After that things kind of went downhill. Nachette (Babygirl's older sister), Shayla (Babygirl's neice), Ron and I situated ourselves in the sun room to the game. Ron made it to about midway through the first quarter before he exited. Shortly after that we lost the ability to view the game and had to depend on the play by play info from my Iphone.

It was a good game and one I believed the Sun could have won right down to the final minute of the game.  I never give up hope. Oh well, there's always a next time.  It will make the next meeting between these two teams that more interesting.  The Sun play the Washington Mystics on Sunday.  Hopefully Ron and I can watch the entiregame together.  I will let you know.

Game Day - Number 1 versus Number 1

Hello from Saint Albans, West Virginia. Home of none other than Renee Montgomery (Babygirl) of the Connecticut Sun. Today is a big day in our neck of the woods and the competitive juices for the Montgomery family were flowing at the crack of dawn.

Number 1 in the East, the Connecticut Sun, versus number 1 in the West, the Minnesota Lynx. Although we will not be able to physically be at the game, it does not mean we will not be there in spirit. We have always told Babygirl that even if we are not
in the stadium, we are in the front row seats cheering her on. She knows that if we are physically at the game we are together cheering for the Sun but if we are home, the circumstances could be different.

There is a lot of preparation involved in preparing for the game even if we are not there. We always begin the day with prayer - prayer to protect all of the players from injury and prayer that the Lord will bestow blessings on Babygirl as well as her teammates coaches and staff. We also usually call or text Babygirl to wish her the best and give her words of encouragement for the game she is about to play.

We are a very competitive family and sometimes that competitiveness needs to be harnessed. Namely, her dad and I usually cannot watch an entire game in the same room. We have different opinions about what is transpiring in the game so we have different game areas in the house. If we happen to have others around, they usually remain in the same room with me while Ron goes to another area or out to the garage. Even though he leaves and goes to another area, you can still hear his cheers, rants
and raves. As I said in the beginning we are a very competitive family.

Log on this evening for game coverage as Number 1 battles Number 1 live from Saint Albans, West Virginia.
