Sun Sign Montgomery To New Contract |
|
The Connecticut Sun announced today it has signed Renee Montgomery to a three-year contract extension.
As per team policy, terms were not released.
“I'm very excited and blessed to continue my journey with the Connecticut Sun,” Montgomery said Tuesday. “Connecticut fans seem to have adopted me, and I love it here as my second home. I’ve heard so many great things about our new coach, Anne Donovan, and I look forward to working with her. See you this summer!”
In three seasons, Montgomery has appeared in all 102 games with 57 starts, averaging 13.2 points and 3.9 assists with 174 three-pointers. She earned her first All-Star selection in 2011, and was the WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year Award winner in 2012.
“Bringing Renee back was our first priority this winter,” Sun coach Anne Donovan said. “Renee has proven herself to be one of our finest assets. Her skill set and team-first mentality make her a perfect cornerstone for the future of the Sun.”
Montgomery was traded to the Sun on January 12, 2010 as part of a major deal with the Minnesota Lynx. Connecticut sent Lindsay Whalen and the No. 2 overall pick in the 2010 WNBA Draft to Minnesota in exchange for Montgomery and the No. 1 pick, which was used to select center Tina Charles.
“Renee has been a valuable piece of our team from the time she arrived here in Connecticut,” Sun Vice President and General Manager Chris Sienko said. “She has excelled in any number of roles she has been asked to fill and we believe she will be a tremendous asset for us in the future as we seek our first championship.” |

Renee Montgomery excels in 'uncomfortable' role |
|
Monday night in Indiana, the momentum had swung. With 7 minutes, 49 seconds left in the game, the Connecticut Sun offense was flailing and looking for a spark. The Indiana Fever had taken advantage to build a six-point lead. “We were struggling to score,” Connecticut guard Renee Montgomery said. “Even when we scored, it was like down to the end of the shot clock.” Montgomery came in and did what she does best. She provided some instant offense, back-to-back 3-pointers, that not only lifted the Sun into a tie, but swung things back their way for much of the remainder of the game. “Thank God,” Connecticut coach Mike Thibault said, when asked about those two three’s going down. The shots didn’t win the game for the Sun — they lost by two points in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference finals — but it did highlight Montgomery’s value to the team even if it’s in a different situation, which is coming off the bench to contribute. “I wouldn’t say I’m comfortable with the role,” Montgomery said. “I think that it’s a learning process. I’ve never had this role, but I wouldn’t say I’m comfortable with it. I would just say that I’m going to do my best at whatever role I’m given.” The mental aspect is the biggest adjustment. Earlier in the season, Mistie Mims admitted to being uncomfortable when she was thrust into a starting role after Asjha Jones was injured. Mims likes to watch from the bench and get the feel of the game before she goes on the court.

Montgomery received 23 votes from a national panel of 41 sportswriters and broadcasters to earn the award. San Antonio Silver Stars teammates forward/center Danielle Adams (nine) and guard Jia Perkins (six) placed second and third, respectively. The honor marked the first time in four seasons in the league that Montgomery was named the league’s top Sixth Woman. In 34 games this season, Montgomery averaged 11.6 points, 3.4 assists and shot .848 from the free throw line. Known for her energetic play, she also ranked second on the Sun in three categories – three point percentage (.364), assists (2.6 apg) and blocks (0.9 bpg) Montgomery recorded nine 15-point games this season and scored in the double digits on 23 occasions. She tied her career-high five steals on June 8 at Indiana and posted a season-high 25 points on Sept. 7 against Phoenix. A standout at the University of Connecticut, Montgomery was drafted fourth overall by the Minnesota Lynx in the 2009 WNBA Draft. A “Huskies of Honor” inductee and three-time All-Big East First Team selection, Montgomery led the Huskies to a 138-11 record during her four-year tenure, which included an NCAA National Championship, two trips to the NCAA Women’s Final Four and four Big East regular season titles.
